expanding thoughts from my site
Paul Klee said that art is not to reproduce the visible but to render visible what is beyond our visual world. (my translation)
technique helps me to render the visible. technique completes the visual of what i feel inside. it allows others to identify what i'm saying. my work is like an open cut. what i communicate, blood. technique the scab, indicating to all, healing. technique finishes my work. it is used at the end, as an application. it can only come at the end; use technique at the beginning and the work would fall in on itself. it would not be a work of art. it would not communicate anything. it helps produce a final image that has some element of refinement. for good or bad, technique helps people recognize it as art.
the soul of my work is communication. does technique add to that communication? what can i say about raw, unrefined expression? fluid lines, rough shapes and forms, the essence of the image. energy, seen. passion, felt. memory, remembered. it would almost be a sketch. loose. thrown together. messy. an artists shorthand. i know what it means but would someone else? would it matter.
technique is the refined finesse of finishing an image; careful, thoughtful consideration.
